Lorraine Gill Galleries - The Outback Series

Bobbin Head Marina

During the early fifties the place where I grew up was still bush; we were land people; farmers by nature. Our father would get us up at dawn; we scrambled into an old ford and take off for the South Coast. This was to avoid the heat of the day.

One of the places we would go to was called Bobbin Head; just a simple jetty made of boulders and for us kids a magic place of octopus; seaweeds; hot burning sands; hot; hot hot; cool water; not too far because of sharks. The searing heat turned the boulders into white burning the colour out of them; the shadows dark violets with still some orange which would return when the sun moved downwards.

The tiny yaughts in the distance were always beckoning.
